Local government authorities in Tanzania have experience of off-grid production and distribution of energy in their own (mostly urban) areas using decentralised energy systems and mini-grids. A clear example of this is demonstrated by the authority in Mbeya, using small hydropower to supply electricity to Mbarali Township. Initiatives such as these highlighted the need for intensive strategies to expand energy generation to different sources by local government authorities.
