A handful of activists in Rufisque have for several years attempted to get the population and the authorities to react to waste management issues plaguing the city landscape. Local citizens, have organised beach and canal cleaning through the local association SOS Rufisque. As a result, the city secured funding from the national and the French governments to launch a project for waste management across the city and its municipalities.
