In 2013, the NEWMAP project was launched which aimed to tackle gully erosion seriously threatening local livelihoods and lives. There were many instances of houses and roads damaged due to erosion occurring in Uruagu Nnewi; however, the project provided financial as well as technical assistance to improve the capacity of national government in disaster management, whilst providing capacity building and jobs for the people to improve their standard of living.
