The government of Nigeria financed the channelization of Ogunpa river in Oyo through the ecological funds. The project aimed to improve the quality of life of the urban population by increasing sanitary conditions and reducing flooding which has devastated local residents in past. There are fears however, that indiscriminate refuse dump in the river which has worsened with population growth poses serious threat to flooding.
