In 2013, the Federal Ministry of Environment partnered with the World Bank and other agencies to launch the NEWMAP project, which aimed to tackle gully erosion seriously threatening local livelihoods and lives. NEWMAP has provided financial as well as technical assistance to improve the capacity of national government in disaster management. In Aba, it undertook civil works to tackle the flood challenge, with road rehabilitations where flood incidents are frequent.
