Following along the lines of other neighbouring countries in adopting healthy lifestyle initiatives, the car-free day materialised in Ethiopia. The initiative aimed at boosting healthy living through collective exercises and combating of non-communicable diseases, whilst reducing pollution on roads usually clogged with traffic. The initiative has grown and was institutionalised to be held as monthly car-free days, filtering into wider attempts to fight air pollution.
