Background

The discovery of the peatlands of the central Congo Basin is said to store 30 billion metric tonnes of carbon. Greenpeace Africa is working with local communities in the DRC to develop alternatives to destructive logging and advocate that the Congo Basin forest be protected. The recent discovery adds urgency in finding development pathways that will radically improve local livelihoods and welfare without compromising the integrity of the ecosystem.
