The government has announced the construction of a 100MW solar power plant in partnership with the private sector. This is the first major government investment in renewable energy and will aim to produce 2.5% of the country's energy needs. Previously Bahrain produced 100% of its electricity through non renewable energy sources and this shift is in response to the country's growing demand for more electricity making this practice unsustainable.
